The 1st XV’s 2025/26 season got underway on Saturday with a trip to recently promoted Windsor. Windsor have a lovely ground, with the castle providing an impressive backdrop, and with the sun shining and a big crowd gathered, the stage was set for a much-anticipated league opener. Teddington selected a youthful side with two of last season's Colts, scrum half Josh HAGON and 2nd row Sam WOOLACOTE given 1st XV debuts. Two Colts from the season before last, prop Henry HUGHES and back row Thom PUGH, were also selected. All had strong games, which is a huge credit to all those who have contributed to the club’s youth section over recent years. The clubs long term goal of providing sustainable talent through the youth and into the seniors is coming to fruition and will stand us in good stead in years to come.
The game started with each side probing but unable to breach the opposition defence. Windsor struck first as their outside backs raced around the Teddington, scoring an impressive try from within their own half. The Antlers then gained some control but were let down by handling errors on several occasions. The visitors finally got even when Harry SMITH went over just before half time. Lucas MUNOZ added the extras to give the visitors a narrow advantage at the break. Into the second half and Teddington started to exert some pressure – centre Tom WILLIAMS went under the posts on 50 minutes and 10 minutes later Teddington stalwart Rory MERCER dotted down for a 5-21 lead. Windsor replied with a deserved try after a period of pressure in the Antlers 22, but it was Teddington who were in full control now as injuries regularly hampered the hosts, and the Antlers enjoyed complete dominance up front. Skipper Alfie RANSOM and perennial try scorer Max AITKEN added two more trys to cap off a good win on the opening day. Final Score Windsor RFC 12 Teddington RFC 31. Man of the Match Sam RAWSTHORNE
