TRFC Vice President and former 3rd XV captain

It is with much sadness to share that former Teddington RFC player and club Vice President Lloyd Davis (pictured in the middle of the front row with ball) has passed away.

Lloyd will be remembered most for being the club’s 3rd XV captain from 2009 to 2017. It was a role he took to with complete dedication. Over those 8 years he led a side made up of gnarly old veterans and younger bucks, all coming together for a common cause. He led from the front, and during this time his beloved players voted him 3rd XV player of the season no less than 4 times (2008/09, 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13). The 3rd XV became a team everyone wanted to play for, and at times it seemed more difficult getting selected for the 3’s than the 1st XV. Lloyd’s commitment to playing was epitomized when he was given a special award on 15th November 2014 for playing his 150th consecutive game for the 3rd XV. That’s 150 games without a weekend off – an achievement that is unlikely ever to be matched. Lloyd was also a prolific try scorer, a real poacher; he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time to cross the whitewash. He loved his stats and there is no doubt he would have been able to tell you exactly how many trys he had registered during his years at Teddington. Lloyd had the club running through his veins and right up until the end he would check in weekly to catch up on the club’s results.

Outside of rugby Lloyd lived a life full of passion, curiosity, and heart. He was an educational leader in colleges, committed to guiding and supporting young people, and he took great pride in his work and in the many lives he helped shape. Lloyd was a devoted father to his two daughters, a proud grandad to his granddaughter and grandson, and a much-loved husband, son, family member, and friend. His family meant everything to him, and he spoke of them often and with great pride.

During the years of fighting his illness, he showed the same courage and determination he did on the rugby field and no doubt was an inspiration to his friends and family.

During his time as captain, he always put out a call to arms on a Monday regarding the next upcoming fixture. He always signed off by saying ‘Who’s with me’. Everyone was, and everyone at Teddington RFC still is. He will be sorely missed. The club will be taking time to remember Lloyd before next week’s 1st XV home fixture against Belsize Park.

Lloyds family will not be holding a funeral, but in the coming months they will share details of a celebration of Lloyd’s life.
