BIG GAME 3
This was the 3rd running of the annual fixture between Twickenham U23's and Teddington U23's for the 'Chris Mapletoft Trophy'.
This years game was magnificently hosted by Twickenham RFC on Monday 28th December. The game was once again a fast flowing exciting spectacle, played in an excellent spirit and watched by the gathered throngs from both clubs.
Tries by Teddingtons James Frankenburger, Mike Ozdilli and finally Harry Griffiths in the last minute of play secured a magnificent 19-14 victory for Teddington, the first time in the short history of this annual fixture. It was great to see plenty of ex-minis and ex-junior players returning to play for Teddington and although a scratch team they put on an exciting, skillful and spirited performance against a Twickenham squad who certainly had greater numbers, but who also featured a host of returning players from college and University.
This group of 18 to 23 year olds many playing for their home clubs for the first time in a year or two certainly proved that there is plenty of enthusiasm to play club rugby out there. It just needs the clubs to keep in contact with these players and nurture them as they return home from university, college or their journeys of self discovery.
Teddington's Tom Wright (who played the full 80 mins and out of position in the 2nd row) was awarded the man of the match by hosts Twickenham RFC.
The Trophy and awards were also given in memory of Luke Pearce from Twickenham RFC who sadly passed away in 2014.
This annual fixture will continue in memory of both Chris Mapletoft and Luke Pearce and will return to Bushy Park in December 2016, when Teddington will attempt to defend this years win.
Well done to all the players from both clubs and the coaches and management who pulled both teams together. Thanks too go to the three match officials who gave up their Bank Holiday afternoons and certainly added to the ebb and flow of the game and the spirit in which it was played. And finally huge thanks to Twickenham RFC for putting on another excellent festive game.
