The U6's is likely to be your child's first introduction to 'proper' rugby and it is therefore critical that fun and enjoyment is at the core of everything we do. We understand that your child's experience at these early can shape the way they view the game for the rest of their life and our coaches work hard to ensure sessions are enjoyable, relevant and inclusive.
With a coach to child ratio of approximately 1 to 5 we work hard to provide your child with the attention they need at this age. All our coaches are volunteers and as a parent you will be encouraged to participate and assist in some capacity or other. Teddington RFC is a club in the traditional sense and that means everyone chipping in and being a part of the fabric.
Sessions start at 10:15 and last a maximum of 1 hour 15 minutes, though can be shorter if the weather or attention span requires it. Equally, we understand that children have different needs and abilities, and if you sense that on a certain day your child is no longer benefitting from the session, please feel free to head home (or to the bar!) early - better to stop at an appropriate time rather than risk putting the player off coming back.
Although we do not play festivals or competitive rugby at this age group, we still follow the RFU's Continuum to ensure the introduction to rugby is a progressive and age appropriate one. There is no contact at this stage and TAGs are used to indicate the 'tackle'. Games are used to reinforce aspects of play over repetitive drills to retain the enjoyment factor and, as a result, the attention span of the players.
Bumps do often occur and although we have qualified first aiders on hand to assist, the first port of call will always be Mum or Dad - for this reason we ask that you remain at the session at all times.
Rugby Boots are not necessary at this age, though play can get slippery during the wetter months so you may decide they are helpful. Please ensure your child is appropriately dressed for sport, and specifically that they have plenty of warm layers if training during the winter months. Please also come prepared with a drink and snacks to keep them hydrated and fuelled throughout the morning.
We look forward to welcoming you to Bushy Park sometime soon - our club is intended to provide enjoyment for parents and children alike - come and get involved and benefit from everything Teddington RFC has to offer.
Please feel free to contact us through the website or come down to training and have a chat with one of the coaches.
