Greeted with nothing more than overcast skies and a mere chill in the air, the Antlers squad and accompanying parents were a happy bunch as they erected the tent - for those with shorter memories last year’s weather could be described as ‘Katrina’ like – prior to the tournament commencing, with only the mild trepidation that the ‘Coach’ had come to see how his Antlers were developing as a team.
Warm up commenced and a long one it was, before we finally positioned ourselves on the pitch to face Harlequins 1. We told the coach about the slow starts that we had made at both Chobham and Reeds, and although it was an entertaining and close game, we ran up short 7-5.
On the back foot, the next warm up focused on defence and against Harrow in the next game, it all came together with a warming 7-4 victory and a performance that exemplified a team working together.
We knew nothing less than a big victory in our third game would hold out hope of semi-final qualification, and the boys rose to the task, with a comprehensive 8-1 win over Hammersmith 2. This was their best performance of the season to date, great teamwork, some excellent tagging and great support running when in attack.
Unfortunately it was not enough to take us through as our first game opponents won all their games to go through.
Next week back to training to work on that defence and build on the attack – well done all, including the dads on marking those those tags and trys!
