Teddington kicked off their Junior Cup campaign with a five try 25-12 win over Guernsey.

With a number of new faces to the Club this season getting a chance to start in this game, the convincing result will come as a huge positive to the team who are now developing excellent depth in a variety of positions

In fact 11 of the 22-player squad at the weekend are new to Teddington this season.

It was Guernsey in fact who made the stronger start and almost opened the scoring after just a few minutes when Teddington failed to deal defensively with a turnover that was moved wide quickly. In the end a tackle in the 22 from Hannah Fray forced a knock on, and Nicola Collins cleared her lines well.

The early scare sparked Teddington into life, and after some solid work at scrum time and some strong running from Heather Smith and Penny Carr, Clare Brown, who had started very well in the midfield, powered through a number of defenders to score out wide.

Teddington’s backs then switched play cleverly as their pack worked up field, and some nice passing almost saw Fray and Gemma Randall through for another try, only for a foot to just hit touch.

Instead it was Carr who was next to score as Teddington took a 10-0 lead into halftime. The ball was moved very well up-field with a series of excellent offloads, with Karen Griffin helping win a turnover to start it off, and after several thrusts for the line, Carr stretched to score in the corner.

Teddington started the second half positively and again some well organised work up front with Smith, Karin Ballantyne, Sarah Edwards and Carr to the fore, helped create some great field position.

Having worked their way into the 22, Aimee Miller spotted a huge gap and sped through to score and finish very well.

Guernsey then hit back with a try of their own, when their hard running fullback went through the middle of the Teddington backline and with the convertion got themselves back into the game as Teddington hadn’t converted any of their three tries.

But the home side made sure with a try a few minutes later. This time Brown, Jane Wescott and Hollie Blenham were all involved in the lead up and Carr took off on a run from a nice inside pass from her sister Elizabeth Carr, making her Teddington debut, and her neat offload saw Smith touch down under the posts.

Teddington weren’t done and replacement Chryssa Warlow was over in the corner a minute later only for the referee to come back for a forward pass.

Guernsey then made the most of a chance from the halfway to send their speedy fullback over again but Antlers had the last say with a great finish from Jo Mair, who raced around a number of would-be tacklers to grab the final score.

All in all it was a good day for Teddington who bounced back from their first loss of the season a few weeks ago, with players like Suzy Taljard and Toni Kershaw making their first starts for the Club.

Penny Carr was deservedly named forward of the match while Clare Brown, who ended the game on the flank, scooped the back of the match for another barnstorming effort.

Next up is a return to league action, with Teddington playing Newbury at home on Sunday.
