It was always going to be difficult to top the successes of 2008/09, a reminder of some of the highlights of that season -

  • Winning promotion as champions of Surrey League 2;
  • Reaching the last 16 teams in the country in the EDF Junior Vase (A national knock out cup competition for clubs playing County league rugby, from Cornwall to Cumbria);
  • Winning the Middlesex Bowl (A cup competition for junior clubs situated in Middlesex);
  • A sequence of 18 straight wins  from the beginning of the season in  September 2008 to February 2009 when we were finally beaten by a single pont in the National cup.
  • Only 2 losses in the whole season.

But amazingly last season has totally eclipsed the successes of 2008/09.

Here’s why:

  • The National Cup win over Bramley Phoenix RFC at Twickenham on Saturday 15th May was the 30th straight win of the season, smashing all previous club records.  As it stands at the beginning of the 2010/11 season the 1st XV have not lost a game at home for over 2 years. The Surrey 1 league title was secured when there was still 4 games left to play. So this  year we will be playing our rugby in the London leagues, somewhere where we have never ventured before.
  • We have won our first ever National title when we beat Bramley Phoenix from Leeds. On our way we have come through  8 gruelling rounds and beaten teams from Middlesex, Sussex, Kent, Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Somerset.
  • We are not just a one team club and have immense strength in depth as demonstrated by our 2nd XV who have also been crowned as champions of their Surrey Merit league. The 2nd XV recorded 14 straight league wins from October 2009 to April 2010. Our 3rd XV finished high in their merit league, and we've even threatened to put out a 4th XV on a number of occasions. If only we had more pitches and a bigger clubhouse!.

At Teddington we have always done things a little differently from the norm and this stands true throughout our 44 year history: Our head coach is Giselle Mather. Giselle is the ONLY female RFU Level 4 coach in the UK and one of a very small number women coaching in the men’s game in the world.  'Rugby World' magazine ran a feature on Giselle and her coaching position with us in their April 2009 issue.

Our now well-established link with St Mary’s University in Strawberry Hill continues to bear fruit, with a regular flow of undergraduates and graduates making the short journey to Bushy Park to play their club rugby. The attraction is as much about the vibrant social scene as it is about the rugby! Our 1st XV was captained in those last two magnificent seasons by the effervescent bundle of fun and ex St Mary's student Pete WHYTE. He has now handed the captaincy batton to Jon DICKSON, who's leadership skills and enthusiasm are just as big, even if the size of the shirt is somewhat smaller. We wish Jon and the players continuing success for this season.

Teddington Mini's and Juniors.

We also successfully nurture our own home grown talent produced from our Junior rugby section. One of these home grown players Ross SWANSON has represented Oxford University in the Varsity match for the last two seasons.

Our Minis and Juniors are yet another well known Teddington success story, with over 650 boys and girls aged 5 -18 continuing to successfully compete with larger clubs from the upper echelons of the game. The Minis section routinely performs well at the National Club Festival with several National Championship winning sides at U9 –U11 in the past 5 years. Additionally the Minis always do well at the Middlesex County Festival, regularly winning the Cup and Plate competitions at various age groups. Perhaps most importantly the Club has won outright the Development squad trophy for the less talented players in the last 2 seasons, reflecting the inclusiveness that infuses the Minis section.   In the Juniors, the club participates in the Herts/Middlesex leagues in various divisions and has in the past won the U13, U15, U17 and Colts Divisions.

Last year our Minis moved back to Bushy Park to join the Juniors after several years operating from hired facilities in East Molesey. The Youth section was one of the first to be national recognized with the RFU Community Rugby Clubmark/Sports England Seal of Approval and continues to lead the way with innovations regarding child welfare, community activities and school relationships. The Youth section sponsors two Community Rugby Coaches in conjunction with Harlequins FC, operating in Richmond and Kingston Boroughs, bringing rugby to Year 5-8 children in 18 schools this year and specifically to U15 Girls at 4 schools locally.  This season will see the usual round of festivals, tournaments and of course the end of season tours to far flung places in the UK for the Minis and for the Juniors, tours to France, Ireland, Germany and Holland.

A highlight of the season was when our U11's won the prestigeous Etihad Cup on 6th May 2010. The finals were played at the Stoop, the home of the premiership club Harlequins. The team completed their finals day without conceeding a single try.

Teddington Ladies.

The Teddington Ladies team are also on the up. They play every Sunday and are this season successfully competing in the RFUW National Challenge League SE Div1.

Clubhouse redevelopment.

Off the pitch things are happening to, the club have recently been granted planning permission from the Local Authority and The Royal Parks  to comprehensively extend and update our rather small and outdated clubhouse. Fund raising for the project is now well under way, and building should commence early next year.
