Gareth Cross and Harlequins Rugby Stars turned out with Councillor Trigg to launch the Step Pedal Jump programme with Teddington Minis RFC on Sunday 25th. The scheme is part of the Smarter Travel Richmond campaign supported by Transport for London.

The day was a great success with over 350 scorecards handed out to eager families who will document their travel to and from Teddington or other sports.

5 – 12 year olds Step Pedal Jump their way to Teddington RFC

Step Pedal Jump – a new scheme that aims to encourage children and parents to walk, cycle and use public transport to get around the borough was launched on Sunday 25 October at the Teddington RFC.

The scheme is part of the Smarter Travel Richmond upon Thames programme being delivered over the next two and a half years by Richmond Council and Transport for London with the objective of reducing congestion and improving local environment and health.

The launch event at Teddington RFC was attended by over 340 children between the ages of 5 and 12 and it turned out to be a fun packed day with rugby training, bake sales, a barbeque and Richmond Councils walking mascot Debra the Zebra.

Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking Councillor David Trigg was in attendance and presented a certificate of participation to Gareth Cross; Club Chairman following a detailed tour of the club facilities. Harlequin’s rugby players Joe Marler and Jono Ross also dropped in to encourage the youngsters to convince their parents not to drive and make healthier, more environment friendly travel choices.

So how does it work? Starting off as a pilot, the scheme will then be rolled out to other clubs in the borough. Participating young members of the club are given a scorecard on which to record their weekly travel patterns for all journeys except those made to school. They must also answer three travel related questions and get their parents/carers to fill out a brief questionnaire. Every completed and returned scorecard will earn the club £1 and the best answers from the children will win prizes.

With the success of Step Pedal Jump, it is hoped that children will be encouraged to develop a mindset which will lead to healthier individuals, a greener community and better funding for local businesses.
