Rob ANDREW with the Antlers players

Teddington players who represented for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust XV with oppostion captain Rob Andrew.

Twickenham Stadium,  Wednesday 8th April 2009

Eleven players from the club ran out at Twickenham Stadium on Wednesday 8th  April 2009 to represent the Cystic Fibrosis Trust XV in a Charity match hosted by the RFU. Cystic Fibrosis is a poignant subject for the close knit Antlers team as our winger Nicholas Lovell is a sufferer of the disease which is the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited disease

The players were asked at short notice to take part in the match and to raise £500 sponsorship each for the Trust. There wasn’t a moments hesitation, as they were all chomping at the bit to get behind Nick and get behind a fantastic cause.

Director of Rugby Jamie McKay has been amazed by the response of the guys, “We have boys from all walks of life Builders, Teachers, Lecturers and Royal Marines all stepping up to do what they can to help. They have put in an amazing effort to try and raise that sort of sponsorship in 2 weeks.”

The game itself raised over £20,000 to
support groundbreaking medical research to stop CF at its root cause; the faulty gene which leaves sufferers with an average life expectancy of just 31. With the Teddington contingient raising over £6,000 of that total. This is truly remarkable when you consider that they only had 2 weeks in which to fund raise. The Teddington men were lead onto the field by guest captain GMTV’s Ben Shephard and lined up against a very experienced Houses of Parliament RFC captained by rugby legend and RFU boss Rob Andrew and including the talents of Paul VOLLEY in the backline. It was a fast and open game which was controlled by International referee Wayne BARNES. The CF Trust XV ran out fairly comfortable winners on a beautifully sunny Twickenham afternoon. Everyone reported that the game was enjoyable and pitch huge! However the best moments of the afternoon was definately running out of the players tunnell onto the hallowed turf and enjoying all the other Twickenham facilities. Which included the baths and palatial changing rooms and of course having a beer or two in the England Players bar after the game.

Nick LOVELL unfortunately wasn't able to play in the game due to recent hospital treatment, but said “It was a real shame that I couldn't play, I’d love to have run out with the lads, but I’m really moved by what the boys have done. What they've raised is remarkable. In fairness though it is typical of the Antlers Spirit”

Well done to the players and also to Pete WHYTE (Teddington 1st Captian) who managed the CF Trust Team and Aileen KILSHAW (Teddington Physio) who provided her valuable on and off pitch healing hands. The Teddington players who took part were:

Chris SHAW, James FERGUSON, Fergus FARRELL, Luke FARRELL, Zach SCOTT, Jon DICKSON, Nick STEVENS, Olly BOGGIS, Gareth CROSS, Robin MARSH, Richard SHARP.
